Rock lights started on off-road rigs as a way to see the rocks under the tyres. Now they are just as often about the look: colour pouring out of each wheel well so the truck seems lit from inside. Xprite's six pods carry 18 wide-angle LEDs each, 108 in total, enough to fill a wheel arch and spill onto the ground.
The wide-angle LEDs are the upgrade over older pods, which threw a narrow spot. Spread wider, the light covers more of the arch and the undercarriage, so fewer dark gaps show between pods. With six in the kit, a typical layout puts one in each wheel well and two along the middle of the frame.

The pods are light and compact, so they tuck behind a bumper lip or up inside a fender liner. By day the truck looks stock; after dark the colour arrives from nowhere, which is half the charm.
Colour comes from a 16-million-colour palette, with static shades, fades, flashes and music modes. Three controls cover it: the Lotus Lantern app on Android or iPhone, the included wireless remotes, and the control box itself.
Plenty of home light strips run on Lotus Lantern as well, and its controllers sometimes announce themselves as ELK-BLEDOM, a light-controller name rather than a speaker. As with those, the app makes the connection, not the phone's settings. The Lotus Lantern pairing steps apply to the rock light controller just as they do indoors.

Rock pods are small and light, and the rectangular shape makes them easy to seat on a flat bracket or frame rail. Xprite includes mounting pads and the hardware to fix them. The main job is choosing spots where the pods throw light where you want it and stay clear of moving parts.
Cable ties every few inches keep leads from dangling onto the trail or catching a branch. Leave some slack where cables cross from body to axle, since those parts move against each other.
On a stock-height SUV or car, pods still work, tucked behind the bumpers and inside the arches. The effect is subtler there: more a glow at each corner than a full floodlit underside.
The kit also goes beyond four wheels. Xprite lists motorcycles and boats alongside ATVs, RZRs and vans, and the pods can give ambient light wherever a 12V source is nearby.
Parked at camp, rock lights double as area light. Set them to a soft warm colour and the ground around the truck glows, enough to find gear and footing without a floodlight blasting across the site. Turn on music mode, and the same pods become a party.
The control box carries a sensitive microphone. In music mode the pods change colour and pattern to whatever is playing, and Xprite pitches the effects for slow songs, dance tracks and relaxing music alike. A timer switches everything off after a set time, so the battery is not left feeding lights while everyone sleeps.

A few courtesies at camp:
On the road the rules change. Coloured underbody and wheel-well light is restricted in many places, especially red, blue and anything flashing. Treat the pods as parked, off-road and show lighting unless your local rules say otherwise.
Six pods also make useful work light. At full brightness in a neutral tone they light the ground around each wheel, handy for airing down tyres at the trailhead, changing a wheel after dark or finding a dropped shackle pin in the grass.

Pick the pods for anything that sees dirt, water crossings or rocks, and for trucks whose ride height leaves a strip too far from the ground to paint it. Pick the Xprite underglow strips for a lower car with a flat underside, where a smooth band looks best.
